Dave Muscato is a musician and activist from the United States.
Founder of Hitt Street, an efficiency, brand-awareness, and grass-roots marketing & consulting organization for non-profits, small businesses, and bands, he is also a promoter, session musician, animal & human welfare activist, and student. Muscato has appeared in Rolling Stone, People, Time, The New York Times, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard Magazine, and on MTV News, VH1, NPR, MSNBC, ABC, Kevin & Bean/KROQ in LA, and Howard Stern, has traveled to more than 120 cities in 6 countries across two continents, and volunteers for a local animal shelter.
In 2004, Muscato founded the website FreeFiona.com, a campaign to Sony/BMG Music for the release of Fiona Apple's allegedly shelved third album, "Extraordinary Machine." The campaign was a success and the album was released to the public on October 4th, 2005, debuting at #7 on the Billboard charts and later earning RIAA "Gold" certification and being nominated for a Grammy Award. The book "Citizen Marketers" by mega-bloggers Ben McConnell & Jackie Huba, available from Amazon.com and creatingcustomerevangelists.com, describes the campaign strategy in more detail.
Muscato dropped out of high school at age 17 to play music, and in 2007, at age 23, decided to go back to school to study economic anthropology. At 25, he is currently a sophomore at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is working on a two-part book called "With Good Intentions" (WithGoodIntentions.org, forthcoming), Part I of which is a guide for potential donors to non-profit organizations about the pitfalls, irrationalities, ethical considerations, & inefficiencies non-profits face in development, charitable giving, and the spirit of volunteerism, how most effectively and efficiently to support a given charitable cause, and why. Part II is a complementary guide for NPO development staff & volunteers about donor behavior from an economic-anthropology approach: how and why people support charitable organizations, how charities can best present themselves to potential donors and understand the mental and social processes that influence who gives to whom and how much, and ultimately, how charities can positively, ethically, and transparently influence the donation behavior of potential benefactors for mutual benefit and the good of the world.
Muscato is a member of the American Federation of Musicians (Local 2-197), American Mensa, The National Restaurant Association, Diversified Investors Group (DIG) of Deleware Valley, the American Anthropological Association, and is a licensed Missouri Real Estate Broker (non-practicing).
